First Annual Ogun State Diabetes Summer Youth Camp (Aug. 2021)

Activites during the camp included lectures from medical professionals and practicioners in the diabetes field, guest speeches and appearances, including one from the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, as well as team building and recreational activities.

The former President, in sharing with the youths that he has been a managing diabetes for over 35 years, encouraged the youth to be active, maintain a heathy diet, urging them to monitor the type of food they take, and above all, not to feel any form of stigmatisation for having the disease.

In addition, he encouraged the youths to develop passion for and eat locally available diabetes- friendly foods like beans-based moyin-moyin (bean pudding) and akara (bean cake). He counseled parents that living with diabetes does not make a child abnormal; thus they should resist the temptation of giving such children any preferential treatment— rather, they should treat  them as they will diabetes-free children.  We cannot thank the former President enough for his presence and continued support.

At the end of the three day event, all participants were equipped with new indepth knowledge on how to live with and manage diabetes. They were also encouraged and advised to share everything they have learnt with family, friends and others living with the disease.

We have no doubt that this event made a tremendous impact in the lives of the youths who attended. We wil be remissed if we didn't thank Dr. Abi Afonja Trust, who provided the financial support for the camp. We will also like to thank the Youth Development Center (YDC), Olusegun Obasanjo Presidental Library (OOPL) where the event was held. And last but not the least, we will also like to thank the Ogun State Government, Commissioner of Health, Dr. Tomi Coker and other government staffs for their attendance and participation.
