REPORT OF THE THIRD ANNUAL OGUN YOUTH DIABETES CAMP, 2023

 

Theme:  OUR YOUTHS, OUR NATION, OUR FUTURE.

 

Venue: Youth Development Centre (YDC), Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.

 

Date: Sunday, 20th August – Wednesday 23rd August, 2023

 

Participating Age Range: 10 – 25years.

Some members of “Thriving with Diabetes”, (a WhatsApp Chat Group set up by Campers after the first meeting in 2021) attended the camp while some joined the virtual sessions via Zoom.

Method of choosing participants:

The attendees were recommended for the Camp by the Diabetes clinics in the public and private health facilities in the participating States. Participants were requested to fill a comprehensive application form that shows the current state of their blood glucose control. They were also required to fill an indemnity section on the form.

 

No. of States covered: participants were from 4 States across Nigeria: Ogun, Lagos, Ondo and Kwara States.

  3. The Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Desk of the Ogun State Ministry of Health, Abeokuta.

Note: The meeting was totally cost-free to all participants.

 

  1. Registration:

Registration of Campers and other participants started at 1.00 pm on Sunday August 20, 2023; after which they were checked into their respective allocated accommodation at the venue. Each camper was given his/her Camp bagcontaining a note book, time table of events, a manual on diabetes and a pamphlet containing the aims and objectives of Talabi Diabetes Centre.

After dinner, Campers had a relaxing time at the venue’s Cinema before retiring to bed.

  1. Meeting kick-off:

The Meeting kicked off at 6:30am on Monday, August 21with an aerobic exercise session lasting for 30 minutes which was anchored by a Physiotherapist.

Class sessions started at 8:30am with the Camp Coordinator’s—(Dr. Adesina) welcome address and housekeeping announcements during which he gave an overview of the Camp Meeting and its scheduled activities. Campers thereafter had their Pre-test.

  2. Having declared the gathering open, the meeting went straight into its scheduled program of activities which was dominated with insightful Type 1Diabetes subject matters as shown in the table below.

In all, 12no. lectures/health talks on diabetes (listed below) with focus on Type 1 were delivered in the course of three days. (Please see our Instagram page for the presentations).

  • Early morning Aerobics:

The Campers’ days at the meeting started with a 30 minutes aerobics session on waking up in the morning handled by a Physiotherapist. All Campers were encouraged to participate. Blood glucose checks before and after the sessions were encouraged and gladly imbibed by Campers.

  • The Campers had a break from lectures after lunch on Monday and Tuesday to visit the venue’s Zoo/Museum.
  • Camp bonfire Night:

The last night of the meeting was capped with a Camp Bonfire Night after dinner: it was a memorable night for all participants features folk dance, riddles and jokes etc. Campers, parents, organizers alike participated fully.

  1. End of Meeting:

The Meeting came to a close at 10.00 AM on Wednesday, August 23rd.

Before commencing the closing ceremony, Campers had their Post- test and debriefing sessions.

The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of Certificate of Attendance to the Campers.

The Meeting was declared closed by the Camp Coordinator at 12:30pm; after which participants started departing the venue.

Talabi Diabetes Centre greatly appreciates all our collaborators, facilitators and the cooperation of the officials of the sister States invited to nominate participants for the meeting; we look forward to the Fourth Annual Youth Diabetes Camp in August 2024.
